Once the vegetation has been cleared from the sides of a bridge, it becomes even more important to make certain that proper covers are placed on the loose dirt prior to a rain event. Failure to protect the sides of the bridge could result in rapid erosion that could damage the structural integrity of the bridge. Plastic sheets are commonly used to do this.

When plastic sheets are laid down, they are often secured with sand / gravel bags at the top to prevent water from running underneath the plastic. Further down the plastic, wooden stakes are driven into the plastic. The plastic is further secured either by using wire to better tie the plasic to the stake or a gravel bag may be placed right above the stake. This is to prevent the wind for hitting the plastic sheet and sending it adrift and landing in the roads where it could be a deadly hazard.
